Research suggests that raw honey is packed with antioxidants, including flavonoids & phytochemicals, which help fight free radicals and reduce oxidative stress - which have been linked to chronic disease and ageing.
The hydrogen peroxide & glucose oxidase in raw honey exhibits antibacterial traits. It contains phenols & flavonoid compounds with anti-inflammatory effects. Studies suggest it can kill germs & heal wounds.
As a prebiotic it contains compounds that can nourish the good bacteria in your digestive tract, promoting a healthy gut microbiome. It has been proven to treat H. pylori bacteria, a common cause of stomach ulcers.
Raw honey is not pasteurized or excessively filtered and still contains bee pollen which is packed with over 250 nutrients, from amino acids, essential fatty acids and antioxidants to vitamins and other micronutrients.
There are the two main types of honey you can buy on Raw Honey USA and they both sound delicious. So what’s the difference? Perhaps more importantly, are both still really considered “raw” honey?
Varietal honey is 100% raw, unpasteurized honey that is as close to nature as you can get. Most varietal honey is slightly filtered to remove unwanted bee parts, but that’s it, no other changes! It may still contain some pollen, propolis and other components from the hive, but each of these are believed to add additional health benefits to the honey. The flavour, e.g. Orange Blossom, Sourwood, Wildflower etc. is indicative of the type of flower or blossom from which the bees harvested nectar and offers each varietal a unique flavour profile. Each varietal may also, to a certain extent, offer a varying composition of enzymes and nutrients.
Infused honey, as the name suggests, is honey that has been infused with all-natural oils, herbs or spices to give it a flavor boost, or to create an exciting, delicious new flavor of honey that would not be found naturally, e.g. cinnamon-infused honey. The base honey that has been infused is still 100% raw honey that has never been pasteurized and not overly filtered, and any additives are all-natural, chemical free ingredients that add their own goodness to the mix.
